![]() Then why in the world would such a person even want to bother downloading and installing a patch that isn't completely point and click? LOLOL! IMO, it should also be the default setting from which one mods the game to one's preferences. It's the one option that REALLY belongs in-game, because it's the one most needed by those most likely not comfortable with editing INI files. Options give divercity but increase complexity to the those not interested in delving into them, not having options makes the game riggid and unsuitable to the preferences of some people. Some things are being defined in the options screen and they are already too many. Whomever does not like using the ini editor, they are very well off playing with the defaults. Having an option in the ini editor to revert to the original game(which I think it exists) is the ideal. Keeping it in the ini file is a perfect course of action. You have claimed that as programming goes, implementing those to the options screen is fairly simple. Why use ctrl-f to find them when you can just move through the pages for that one option you want to change. Even if it does end up 100 pages of options. So, having mentioned my 'ideal', I'm gonna drop the topic since I won't be volunteering to do the work myself. In an all-volunteer project with no boss, that's likely to be the first thing to go. Having been a programmer, I'm aware that the focus is always on more and deeper functionality, and that generally it requires a project manager or equivalent to force ease-of-use and tech documents to get a similar focus. That would make 1.13 much more accessible to non-techs and newbies, which would seem to me would broaden its appeal considerably.īringing all the rest of the settings in-game would be more of an 'ideal world' kind of thing. That means you'd have to check the individual settings when entering the Options screen to determine its current setting every time. It also seems to me that it should be A) Default, B) Selectable in-game & C) Automatically turned off as a meta-setting when any individual setting it covers is changed either in-game or via outside INI file mods. It should have a pop-up explanation that this sets the game to play as much as possible like 1.12 (however you phrase that). But at a minimum, it seems to me that an option called 'Default Settings' should exist. įrankly, mostly I'm ok with the more esoteric options staying outside the game if it's that much more work to bring them in. INI Editor, why would that require more coding than putting the same thing in-game (Aside from any additional planning in terms of layout and such, of course)? In a worst-case scenario, couldn't you encapsulate the INI editor code as a subroutine and call it from in-game? ![]() RoWa21 or Flugente will be happy to add it to the trunk. ![]() If you can program a better option selection, grab the code, patch it, and give us a. The INI files (yes, there are more than one) do contain quite a bit of info on the options, the Bear's Pit forums do have more info, and we are usually happy enough to answer in the IRC channel, though most of us in IRC are Europeans, so European times only.Īs for the programming part, we are always looking for programmers. Jumping in from 1.12 to current stable (1.13 revision 4870) or unstable (1.13 revision 7269) does mean you will be swamped. 1.13 does mostly cater to the Bear's Pit forum crowd, which does follow development a bit closer. Alternatively, you can always use Stracciatela: Īs to why this is the current method, it does stem from the early early versions of 1.13, and the way the first options were externalized. If you don't wish to use the INI Editor, you can edit the JA2.ini file directly. How hard would that be? Why do ANY options have to be buried in an external editor that new people will never find?Use the INI Editor and choose vfs_ for an experience closer to 1.12.
